Pink & Gray Baby Shower {Sweets Table}

I decided to split the baby shower posts into 3 parts. Today is part one. The Sweets Table! I designed the sweets table, and made almost everything on it. My Aunt made the cupcakes, and Liz & Netta made the m&m cookies. Me, Liz and Netta worked together to hang the pom-poms and lanterns. In other words, Liz got up on the ladder, while me and Net told her exactly where everything should go. There was a lot of "a little to the left" or "just one inch toward me, and a couple inches higher". Luckily there was no falling off the ladder!!

I made the cupcake stand!! I seen the prettiest tutu cupcake stands on Pinterest, and just knew I had to try to make one of my own. It was pretty easy, I mostly used things I already had, and only had to buy the tulle, which was a few dollars at Michaels.

I also made a really simple pennant banner for the table. It says "sweet baby girl". It is made from pretty scrapbook papers. I cut the paper into triangles, printed out my letter circles that I made in PSE, cut them out, then glued them on. Then I punched two holed in each triangle and strung it on two strands of grey yarn. Super easy!! I love it when easy things make such a big impact.

I also saved up a few boxes before the party, and then I just covered them with pretty wrapping paper. That way I could elevate some of the desserts. Pretty. ♥

This was the first time I ever made macaroons. I am pretty darn proud of myself. I read lots of tips before starting. And I thought I failed, cause they were undercooked, gooey and had hollow spots inside. I put them back in, but it was too late to make them not hollow. So I just cooked them until they weren't gooey anymore. They seemed good enough, although I tested about half of them in the process of figuring out how long they needed to cook.

After they cooled, they were crispy, and I was sad. But I went ahead and made the filling, which is a white chocolate buttercream, and a raspberry sauce in the middle. I read that if you overcook them by a few minutes, it's OK, because once you add the filling, and put them in the refrigerator for a few days, they will soften up inside. I made them three days early, so, to the refrigerator they went. And they day of the party, I tried one, and they were awesome!! So soft inside, with an eggshell like texture on the outside, YAY!! They still had the hollow spots, but nobody noticed or cared. And everyone loved them!! Plus they look pretty. And I like that.

I also made the Pink Lemonade Pie, the cake pops, the dipped pretzels, the chocolate covered oreos, the marshmallow treat pops and the pretty stickers for the bottoms of the Hershey kisses. I got all that done one to two weeks before the party, and had them packed and ready to go before leaving for California!! It was nice not to rush, or have to bring recipe ingredients to California with me.

I designed the dessert labels, the sugar & spice sign and the thank heaven for little girls sign in Photoshop Elements. And it is hard to see, but I also made two cupcake liner pom poms that I attached to glass candlesticks, and set next to the pink daisies. The tutorial for them is at Kara's Party Ideas. My sister loved them, and is using them, as well as the framed quote, as decoration in the nursery.

I love how everything turned out. It's awesome when it looks just as pretty in real life as it did in my head. Cause trust me, that doesn't always happen!! And that table was almost completely empty at the end of the party too, which is a good thing!!

I'll be back sometime this week with part two {food and drinks}. I have company coming tomorrow, and staying for a couple of days, but after that I should have some free time to finish up those pictures.

♥ Kim

  1. Love this sweet table!!!! It is amazing. I am planning my daughter's ballerina party and was drawn to a pic from your party on Pinterest. I need to make a cupcake stand with a skirt like you did. Did you make those cake pops too? I am so impressed. Please share how you make them stand up so perfectly. Mine come out nice and round, but they can't stand. SO happy to have found your blog. Happy New Year.

  2. Thanks so much!! Yes, I made the cake pops. This was my first time making stand up ones.

To make them stand, I put the straw in them, dipped them in the candy melts, then set them directly on wax paper (ball side down), versus turning them over and putting them in styrofoam (stick side down).

The candy malts will pool a little bit at the bottom, but that is okay, cause they will have a nice flat bottom, and sit perfectly.

Hope that helps. Happy New Year to you too!! :):)

  3. This is amazing.. I am throwing a baby shower for a dear friend with the same color scheme.. Where can I find the place cards and graphics you used to describe the treats, the thank heaven for little girls and the what little girls are made of? I love them all and would love to use this fir the shower.

    Thanks!

  4. Thank you. :) I created all the graphics myself. I'll have to figure out if there is a way to send the place cards so that they can be personalized, I use PSE, and that is the format they are in. But the signs, I can send right away. Write me back at kimerella_2000@yahoo.com, and include your e-mail address. I'm more than happy to share them with you. :)

  5. Hello!!! I love your post!! I am throwing a baby shower for a girlfriend...she is having a little boy. I too am going to have a desert table. I was wondering which stickers you used for the kisses? Also how did you make your cupcake stand? It is beautiful!!!

    Thanks,

  6. Alesha,

Thanks!! I designed my own hershey kiss labels for the shower, since I wanted everything to match perfectly. But they were inspired by some that I seen on Etsy. Here is the link for the shop that inspired mine:

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/PoshPixels

Mine are personalized specifically for my sister, and I don't feel comfortable offering them to others, since they are so based so closely on Posh Pixels designs. But hopefully you will find something there that you love!! :)

For the cupcake stand I started by cutting 5 circles out of foam board, they were 8", 9", 10", 11" and 12". I marked the center on the bottom and top of all circles. Then I got some soup cans (the condensed Campbells soup size ones) and taped some plain white cardstock around them. I traced where they would go on each circle, and then I hot glued them on. This was the hardest part, since they cans did not have flat ends to apply the glue.

For the bottom of the stand, I used 7 cans (canned vegetables size) and followed the same directions as above, only I glued one in the center, and the other 6 around it to create a circle grouping that would support the weight of the stand. These cans were old empty ones, the other 4 for between the tiers were full (I didn't have empty ones for those, and thought the extra weight would be better for support).

The next step is optional, but I didn't like the glue showing around the edges (I applied extra, since it felt kinda wobbly) so I used some white yarn, and crocheted some edging to cover up those seams. I just chained to the right length, and then glued the edging on. After that I spray painted the entire thing white, so it would match perfectly, and look finished.

Finally I glued ribbon around the edges of all the tiers. And followed the instructions to make a tutu and glued that around the bottom tier. Which basically involved cutting ribbon slightly longer than needed, tying pieces of tulle around the ribbon, glueing the skirt onto the stand, then cutting off any extra ribbon at the ends.

My cupcake stand was made using things I had around the house, since I didn't want to spend any money on it, or wait to go shopping. The bumpy drive to an from the shower cause it to break both times, but as long as you are gentle with it during transport, it should be fine!! Or instead of using cans, you could use something with similar dimensions that has a flat bottom and top, so you could glue the entire surface. Possibly cake dummies, as other cupcake stand tutorials suggest.

I hope all this made sense. Good luck with your friends baby shower!! :)

  7. Ohhh my that is awesome!!!! I made a 4 tier cupcake stand already out of plates and candlestick holders but the plates are not flat enough! This is going to be so much better! Thank you soooo much for sharing! I hope it turns out good. There is going to be over 40 people so I hope I can pull this off! Haha!!

  9. This is gorgeous!!! I love it and am so glad I found your post! How did you get the marshmallow pops to stand, are they in Styrofoam? Do you have a tutorial on how you wrapped the straws and added the bow? I'm helping to plan a first birthday and am loving the printables too. I'm a little late to comment, but do you still have them and would you be willing to share?!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hi Renee, thanks for your sweet comment! And you're not to late commenting!! I still have one more post to do about the baby shower, and just did part 2 on the food a couple days ago. :)

The marshmallow pops are in styrofoam. I found 2 short rectangular boxes, and I cut a piece of styrofoam to fit inside. Then I taped 4 pieces of cardboard all around the sides of the box (because I knew I wanted to put the glass gems inside, so I needed the sides to be a couple inches higher). I figured out where I wanted the holes to go, then punched them through the box and styrofoam with the lollipop sticks I was using. After that I covered the box with wrapping paper, then carefully poked the holes into the paper too. At the party all I had to do was put the marshmallow pops into the already poked holes and then add the gems! Hope all that made sense.

I don't know what you mean by wrapped the straws?? I used paper straws that I bought off of Amazon for the cake pops. And I used lollipop sticks for the marshmallow pops. For those I just cut a piece of ribbon, tied it around the stick, then tied it in a bow, and trimmed the ends. I also sealed the ends of the ribbon with a lighter, so they wouldn't fray. It's optional, and if you do, just be careful to only let them flame touch the ribbon for a second!! You don't wanna burn the ribbon. :)

The printables are available. Just click on printable in the labels section of my sidebar. There will be links to download them.

Hope the birthday party turns out great! Let me know if you have any questions.

  12. Thank you for the info! I actually thought the straws were wrapped by hand like that... until you and another party-planning friend told me they're actually bought like that. Learn something new every day :) Can't wait to see the next post!

  13. Thanks Erika!!

Renee, I thought that might be what you thought. But I added the extra info, just in case. ;) Paper straws are awesome!! I love them.

I'm wanting the ones you used on the dessert table and the bigger one says delicious food on the buffet bar. Hope mine turns out half as good as yours, wow!

  18. This is by far the most amazing, beautiful set up I've seen yet. You are one talented person!
I'm trying myself to do a sugar and spice theme baby shower but I'm wondering how you print your own lables/tags for everything. Is there a certain program I need to get?
I will for sure be following and passing on your blog!

  19. Michelle, Sorry I took so long to reply, I tried by e-mail but you don't have your e-mail attached to your account, so I couldn't, and then I forgot. So I am gonna reply here, and hopefully you get it. :)

I use Photoshop to design all of my labels and stuff. It is really costly, I used to use Photoshop Elements (I believe that is what I used for the baby shower) but that is still around $100, and some people find it intimidating.

I've seen others mention that you can use PicMonkey or iPiccy to create printables online for free. I've never used them myself, but I just did a google search for "printables with iPiccy" and "printables with PicMonkey" and seen several tutorials. So maybe you can try that! Good luck!!

And thanks for the sweet comment about the baby shower. :):)

I made them in Photoshop, but it took me forever, I'm sure I did things the hard way, lol. I'm really busy, and don't have the time to write up a tutorial for them right now. I hope you understand. :):)

  27. I love how you did this baby shower!! It looks AWESOME! You are very creative! It really looks like a paid professional did it. I am throwing a baby shower for a good friend of mine and will definitely be stealing a couple of ideas.
I was wondering how you made the chocolate dipped oreos?

    1. Lora,

Thanks!! That really sweet of you to say. :)

I was gonna just type out how I made the oreos, but then I found this tutorial: http://seevanessacraft.com/2012/02/diy-tutorial-lucky-chocolate-covered-oreos-free-printable/ and it is EXACTLY how I did mine, same brand, same supplies, same instructions!! The only thing different is the colors of course, oh, and I used regular oreos, instead of the mint ones. So I am gonna let her wonderful photos do the explaining!

I hope your friends baby shower turns out amazing! Have a great week! :):)

  28. Hello Kimberly,

I absolutely loved everything that you did for this shower!! Everything looked perfect and I was so amazed that you did it all yourself...fabulous work!! Thank you so much for sharing your ideas!! I am having a baby shower in April and the colors will also be pink & grey as those are the colors that I will be decorating the nursery in. I loved how you did the place cards describing each dessert and have searched for something similar everywhere....online, craft stores, staples. I have not been able to find anything like the ones that you used. I saw your post to someone else about emailing them your and was wondering if you would mind sharing with me also? I would greatly appreciate it!! Once again your work was absolutely stunning and I thank you for any help that you can provide me with!!

    1. Rochelle,

Thanks!!! I honestly can't remember how I mixed the colors to come up with the colors for the marshmallows, it was soooo long ago. I know I used Wilton brand candy melts, and you have to use the oil candy coloring (sold in the same section) to color them. They only sell basic colors, so I did some experimenting. I used pink candy melts by themselves for the pink, and for the darker color I think I started with pink (and possibly a couple brown candy melts too???) and added tiny amounts of red and a drop of black coloring (only a drop at a time, a little goes a long way). I might have added a bit more pink coloring too, I really can't remember. Sorry I'm not that helpful. I would recommend writing down what you add (I didn't, and regretted it) that way if you don't have enough of your first batch, you can make more of the exact same color.

      Good luck!!! :):):)
